A chemical barrier around the entire perimeter of a home or building protects all entry points so that termites looking for a new food source are unable to enter and are killed on contact.
Termite protection chemical treatments in accordance with
Australian Standard AS 3660.2 are usually required
every three (3) or five (5) years (depending on the type of foundations of your home) because the biodegradable chemical control agent used to treat and protect your home has a limited effective life span.
Usually, the last treatment date to the property will be recorded on a treatment notice, which has been placed in your electrical meter box. When a visual inspection is carried out by a DAP Pest Control technician you will be informed of when the next treatment replenishment to your property is required.
If landscaping has altered the soil levels a booster re-treatment should be carried out sooner. Any landscaping or changes in soil levels will disturb the chemical protection barrier. Unless the termite barrier is reapplied, your property will be unprotected.
Reduce your risk
. • Plumbing leaks, drainage problems and roof leaks should be addressed promptly, as termites
are attracted by damp conditions.
• Garden beds should not be built up against walls, as this allows termites an undetectable
entry point to the building.
• Do not block or cover sub-floor ventilation with garden beds or paving.
• Do not stack materials against walls, as this can allow termites to enter without early detection.
• Sub floor areas should be well ventilated and vents should not be obstructed.
• Storage of cellulose products in the sub floor space should be avoided.
• Use
termite resistant timber for works around the property, including retaining walls.
• Use metal stirrups for verandah and gateposts.
• Clean and check timber decks regularly.
• Do not build rainwater tanks up against walls, as this may allow termites an undetectable
entry point to the building.
All homes are constructed differently, and the exact requirements for each barrier can differ. When on site a DAP technician will explain exactly how we propose to install the barrier to your home.
However, as a general measure the following techniques are used by our technicians to protect existing homes:
Trenching and floodingWe dig a trench in the soil areas sounding your home and then flood the trench with chemical, and replace the top soil, treating as we go. If pavers are not cemented in place, we will lift the pavers to treat the soil beneath. The pavers are then neatly replaced.
Drilling and injectingWe can drill through concrete or pavers and inject the chemical into the soil below. After injection, the holes are then plugged with a matching coloured plug. When complete these drill holes are neat and tidy, and blend into your concrete or pavers. They are less obvious than you expect, and you will find that most people do not notice them.
